Kevin Costner drama ends ‘Yellowstone’ season five second half.2

We finally have an answer about Yellowstone’s future, but it might not be what enthusiasts were hoping for. In 2023, Paramount confirmed that the show would end after the second half of season five, and it has since been revealed that those episodes will premiere in November 2024.

Yellowstone’s first half of the fifth season premiered in November 2022 and concluded with a mid-season finale on January 1, 2023, with the promise of six more episodes to close out the show’s massive fourteen-episode run. However, actor Josh Lucas, who plays the younger version of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in flashbacks, recently indicated that there may be even more episodes coming than previously expected, telling Deadline that after speaking with creator Taylor Sheridan, “I think we’re going to do 10 or so more episodes and wrap up the story.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that the last block of Yellowstone episodes may be expanded. In a June 2023 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan stated that the last half of season five might include ten episodes, bringing the season total to eighteen. “If I think it takes 10 episodes to wrap it up, they’ll give me 10,” she remarked. “It’ll be as long as it needs to be.”

It’s unclear whether Lucas’ version of John Dutton will appear in any of those episodes, but it’s possible that Sheridan intends to utilize flashbacks to close out the character’s journey rather than having star Kevin Costner return for the series finale.

However, according to Puck, Kevin Costner is still hoping to return to the show, either as a cameo or in another capacity. According to the publication, Costner has been indicating that he will return to the show in some capacity, “but there are currently no discussions for him to do that.” The source also stated that the final episodes, which are scheduled to begin filming this spring, have already been scripted without Costner’s appearance in mind.

Here’s all we know thus far about Yellowstone Season 5.

When will season five return?
In March 2024, Ian Bohen, who plays cowboy Ryan on the show, hinted at the timeline. In an interview with ET, Bohen stated, “We will return, rumor has it, in May.” We should be on by November, roughly.” Those dates are definitely not set in stone, however, as the actor swiftly added, “You’re gonna have to give me some leeway on that.” It won’t be sooner than that. It could be June. We shoot six episodes in November or December, then we go through the holidays, and then maybe the season finale…series finale, possibly on the Super Bowl, and that will be the end of an era.”

It’s a disappointingly lengthy wait for viewers who have been looking forward to more Dutton drama since the show’s midseason finale in January 2023.

Regarding the conclusion, Bohen expressed his sentiments, saying, “It’s like going to college and graduate school with the same people for six or eight years, and you’re like, ‘Wait, we have to go? Then what do we do next? It feels empty and strange, so I’m going to attempt to squeeze out every last bit of it.”

Paramount previously claimed that the show would return in the summer of 2023, but that date was later changed to November, then December, before being revealed for November 2024. Currently, no precise date has been specified.

Is this the final season?

Yellowstone will not get a sixth season. The revelation of the show’s cancellation marked the conclusion of several anxious months of uncertainty regarding its future. In early February 2023, Deadline reported on speculations that Yellowstone might be ending, noting, “The root of the issue with the original Yellowstone series is star Kevin Costner and conflicts over production schedules. According to insiders, Paramount Network has denied Costner’s most recent pitch and will instead focus on the other show.

Paramount’s only reaction at the time appeared to deny the reports, adding, “We have no news to report.” Kevin Costner is an important element of Yellowstone, and we hope that remains the case for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s creative vision, we are constantly working on franchise extensions of this incredible world. Matthew McConaughey is an incredible performer with whom we would love to collaborate.”

However, in late March 2023, Paramount Media Networks president Chris McCarthy confirmed that McConaughey will be entering the Yellowstone-verse, starring in a new spin-off that will take place regardless of whether Costner returns to Yellowstone or not. “[Yellowstone] wouldn’t be what it is today without Kevin and we hope that that stays for a long time to come,” he said.

Will Kevin Costner appear in the final episodes?

There has been much conjecture over whether Kevin Costner will participate in the series’ impending, now-final episodes, with legal records filed by the actor in his current divorce proceedings with Christine Baumgartner adding to the anxiety. In the records discovered by Insider in July 2023, Costner reportedly stated, “I will make significantly less in 2023 than I did in 2022. This is because I am no longer under contract with ‘Yellowstone,’ my primary source of income last year.”

In a September child support hearing, Costner added, “I’ve been told it’s a little disappointing that [it’s] the #1 show on TV, so I’m not participating.” He also stated, “I will probably go to court over” the payout for the second half of the season.
Sources close to the project told Puck in May 2023 that Costner would not confirm his return for Yellowstone’s final episodes “until he finds out and is comfortable with,” how his character, John Dutton, is being written off. According to Puck, the first few episodes of the second half of season five have been scripted to accommodate both Costner’s possible appearance and his potential absence. According to the magazine, Costner was not notified of the show’s impending cancellation before the announcement.

Some fresh faces will also appear throughout the season. Kai Caster, who fans may recognize from American Horror Story, will play a young cowboy named Rowdy, Lainey Wilson as a musician, Lilli Kay (Your Honor and Rustin) as an assistant to the Duttons, and Dawn Olivieri—perhaps best known to Taylor Sheridan fans as James Dutton’s sister Claire on 1883—will take on a new persona in the Yellowstone universe as corporate shark Sarah Atwood.

Jen Landon, who plays Teeter, and Kathryn Kelly, who plays Jimmy’s new girlfriend, Emily, have previously been revealed as series regulars for the season. Jefferson White, who plays Jimmy, is also slated to return to the show, casting doubt on earlier speculation that he will move the spin-off show 6666. Kelly and White did not appear throughout the first half of the show’s fifth season.
In a late February 2024 article, Puck reported that the last episodes of the series were not planned to include Costner, yet a later report by the outlet indicated that Costner is, “telling people he’s planning to return for at least a cameo and possibly more.” The article continued, “There are currently no discussions for him to do that.”

The cast is increasing.

Josh Lucas will return as the younger version of John Dutton, as will Kylie Rogers (who portrays young Beth) and Kyle Red Silverstein as young Rip, implying that we will witness flashbacks to the family’s past. Jacki Weaver, who plays the family’s business foe Caroline Warner, will also return, and Mo Brings Plenty (Rainwater’s right-hand man, Mo) and Wendy Moniz (Governor Lynelle Perry) have been promoted to series regulars.

Along with White, Yellowstone’s core cast is anticipated to return for the fifth season, including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, and Gil Birmingham.
The Yellowstone universe is expanding.

In addition to the fifth season, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has already started expanding the show’s canon on Paramount+. In addition to the existing Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and Sam Elliott-starring prequel, 1883, the streaming service has another Yellowstone origin narrative set during the Great Depression era, named 1923, starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, which will return for a second season. Sheridan has also signed agreements with other in-development spinoffs, including the recently announced 1944 and 2024.

The two new series appear to follow the formula of previous prequels, concentrating on a certain era in the Dutton family’s history. It is currently assumed that 2024 will be the long-awaited production starring Matthew McConaughey, while no casting information has been published. Rumors have circulated that Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes are all in talks to join the spinoff.

Like 1883 and the rest of Sheridan’s upcoming projects for Paramount, the show currently operating under the working title 6666 is expected to be streaming first on Paramount+, and while no date has been announced for its debut, The Atlantic reports that it will premiere sometime in 2023. In a June 2023 interview with THR, Sheridan appeared to throw that timescale into doubt, saying, “[6666], for a variety of reasons, requires a unique level of special care because this is a real place with real families working here.” You must honor the lineage. “I told [the studio] to be patient.”

The summary given with the show’s announcement appears to indicate that it would be set in the present day, on the historic 6666 Ranch (the actual 266,000-acre ranch owned by Sheridan) in West Texas.
