Browns Expected to Make $13 Million Move With First-Round Pick

Despite trade speculations, the Cleveland Browns are set to exercise cornerback Greg Newsome's fifth-year option.

Newsome was a first-round pick by the Browns in 2021 and has had an eventful time in Cleveland. He's proven to be an effective cornerback, but he's been overshadowed by Martin Emerson Jr.,

who has taken on a larger position on the defense. With the development of Emerson and the presence of Pro Bowler Denzel Ward, Newsome is now mostly playing in the slot.

Initially, Newsome was not a big lover of the job. He fought back against it before last season, causing some trade speculation. However, he has settled in with Jim Schwartz.

As a previous first-round choice, Newsome's contract includes a fifth-year option worth $13.38 million for the 2025 season.

The Browns have until May 2 to decide whether to pick up the option. Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of believes the Browns will do this.

"The Browns are expected to pick that up by the May 2 deadline," Cabot stated on April 7. "The Browns believe that you can never have too many good cornerbacks, and they have four: Denzel Ward, Newsome, Martin Emerson Jr.,

and [Cameron] Mitchell. According to Pro Football Focus, Newsome and Ward are tied for the 42nd best cornerback in the NFL in 2023. Emerson placed 63rd."If the Browns exercise Newsome's fifth-year option, he will be tethered to the team for another two seasons.
