Malaysian beauty queen stripped of her title over viral Thai holiday video

Viru Nikah Terinsip, a Malaysian influencer-turned-beauty queen, has lost her title after a holiday video she published on social media sparked outrage.

The 24-year-old, who won the Unduk Ngadau Johor pageant last year, was stripped of her title by the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), despite publicly apologising in a 53-second video sent to her TikTok account @_duyung.darat.

"We were led to believe that she went on a private vacation with her family to Thailand. We do dumb things and get carried away on vacation," he remarked. "If the video did not go viral, no one would know it happened."

Noting that "this would not be an issue if she was simply an average person," he said: "There were a lot of conflicting emotions; some saw the humour in her video, some sympathized, and some were upset and complained.

"We hope she accepts the decision properly. Let this serve as a reminder to all Unduk Ngadaus to avoid making the same error," he added.

Unduk Ngadau is a cultural beauty competition and one of the highlights of Sabah's Kaamatan (harvest) festival.

In the video, Viru can be seen responding to many men's seductive dances while on vacation in Thailand.

"Most importantly, please exclude my family and friends, as they are not involved in this problem. It is up to you if you accept [my reasoning], but this comes from the heart. "Thank you for listening."
