Who Is Colin Kaepernick’s New TV Show Actually For?

In sixth grade, I began to seriously evaluate my relationship with America. I'm in the lunchroom with other black kids, joking about whatever it was that tweens spoke about in the early 2000s.

Inevitably, the subject shifted to our basic attempts to develop some type of black awareness. On this day, I heard another black student

Discuss his refusal to stand for the flag and recite the pledge of loyalty, which is how we begin each day at Swift Creek Middle School.

Because of this speech, I stopped pledging loyalty and began to consider what America expected of me, as well as what I wanted out of this place. To this day, his voice rings in my head, asking the same question: What are you dedicating your devotion to?

When word of Colin Kaepernick's choice to sit during the national anthem before his NFL games began to circulate in 2016, that question was the first thing that came to mind.

Following many high-profile events, typically involving law enforcement, that resulted in the deaths of numerous African Americans and young people, a starting black NFL quarterback began organizing his own quiet protests every Sunday.

As a workaround, Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem, following the advice of veteran and former NFL player Nate Boyer.

This appeared to spark a firestorm that was even more intense than Kaepernick had perhaps predicted. Beyond the bigotry that is always evident when Black people—especially successful Black people—dispose of the national rituals, Americans are not very good at questioning our allegiance to the various national traditions.

The rest of the tale is well known: Kaepernick went on to kneel; he donated his checks; a number of conservative media outlets and white NFL viewers became extremely alarmed; further players joined him,

while some players expressed disapproval; the San Francisco 49ers terminated him at the end of the season, and he hasn't played football since.
