It is anticipated that Jrue Holiday will continue to be an integral part of the Boston Celtics for the foreseeable future. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the veteran guard and the Celtics have allegedly reached an agreement on a contract extension which would keep Holiday in Boston until the 2027-28 season. The extension will be for a period of four years and will be worth a total of $135 million.
During the summer of 2018, Brad Stevens made a bold move by purchasing Holiday from Portland. This acquisition came just a few days after the Bucks made a blockbuster trade with Damian Lillard, which involved the two-time All-Star player. Holiday, who was an All-Star for Milwaukee the previous year and won a championship with the team in 2021, was acquired by Stevens through a transaction that involved the exchange of Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams, and two first-round picks between the two teams.
The price that was paid for Holiday was quite high, but it has proven to be worthwhile for Boston. The Celtics defense, which has a defensive rating of 110.5 and ranks second in the NBA, has been led by Holiday, who was named to the first team of the All-Defensive team during the previous season. In terms of offense, he has averaged 12.5 points per game, with 5.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, coming from a shooting percentage of 48.1 percent overall. Holiday’s shooting percentage from three-point range, which is 43.1 percent, places him sixth in the NBA.
The 33-year-old Holiday made the decision to forego his player option for the upcoming season, which was worth $37.3 million, in order to accept this new agreement. According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, the last year, which will begin when Holiday reaches 37, is supposedly a player option. Holiday will be able to exercise this option.
Not only does the deal provide Holiday and the Celtics with some degree of assurance regarding the future, but it will also save the Celtics around $9 million against the cap for the next season. It is also possible that it will assist in maintaining the cohesiveness of Boston’s core beyond the upcoming season, as Stevens and his team attempt to negotiate life in the second echelon of the NBA.
During the following season, Jaylen Brown will begin receiving his maximum extension, Mitch Tatum will most likely receive his own maximum salary, and Derrick White will be approaching the final year of his contract. It is possible that things will become more complicated after the upcoming season as a result of the restrictions that have been placed on teams in the second apron. These restrictions include the inability to combine multiple players or contracts into a single deal, the inability to take on more salary than they send out, and the absence of a mid-level exception.
